Multi Use Academic & Library Hubs for Community Colleges

About

Community colleges are reshaping academic buildings and libraries to support changing student needs, evolving instructional models, and tight financial constraints. This session examines the College of the Mainland Library & Learning Center, a four story, multi use facility that combines a modern library, business and computer classrooms, a multi tiered auditorium, and diverse student study and collaboration spaces. Designed for a coastal Texas campus, the building demonstrates how strategic planning and building systems coordination can balance program richness, cost discipline, and long term adaptability. Presenters will explore how shared, flexible space increases utilization and supports student engagement, how environmental conditions informed systems decisions, and how stakeholder alignment helped maintain schedule and budget goals. Attendees will gain insight into what modern academic and library buildings can deliver for today’s community college campuses.

HSW Justification

This session addresses Project Planning and Design and Project Development and Documentation through a facility serving a diverse community college population. For a coastal Texas campus, environmental conditions and systems decisions carry direct safety implications — inadequate resilience planning exposes occupants to harm from flooding and severe weather. Flexible, well-coordinated spaces support student well-being and collaboration, while equitable access to quality academic and library resources elevates the experience for underserved communities — a clear welfare outcome. All four learning objectives directly support these HSW outcomes, satisfying the 75% threshold for LU|HSW designation.
