Consulting Concepts: Commissioning and Code Compliance

About

Building systems commissioning has become a key element of project delivery that not only helps design teams and contractors meet owner project requirements, but can ensure adherence to code requirements, support sustainability goals, and protect occupant health and safety. This presentation will discuss the different elements found in the commissioning process: the basic process versus technical commissioning, as well as fundamental versus LEED commissioning. It will also explore the code requirements associated with commissioning, including when it is required, exceptions to the code, and how commissioning can serve to verify that buildings meet other applicable codes. Finally, it will illustrate how commissioning of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and life safety systems can protect the health and safety of building occupants through measurements of indoor air quality and field verification and operation of building life safety systems.

HSW Justification

This program qualifies for Health, Safety, and Welfare credit because it addresses life safety and code compliant building systems. Emergency lighting, fire alarm systems, and required equipment clearances protect occupants from electrical hazards and fire risk, while proper coordination supports safe emergency response and code compliant construction.
